mink & shoes is a gooey drip of murky low slung slinky disco, falling somewhere in between smokey retro futurism and hazy desolation. it s a seductively squiggling romp through the outer reaches of the cosmos sky-crawlingly atmospheric, slow-motion dance floor abstraction for acid heads and space cadets. with navid izadis intoxicating vocals its quite something, and comes in three flavours: dub, radio and original.

up first is gigolo, a spare and weird house cut with sine waves and random claps, hunched drums and trippy synth lines. it s a unique track made in a unique way and will lead to plenty of freaky dance floor moments, for sure. co. art is a whacked out techno cut with slap-funk claps, blistering and blistered synth lines and a rugged bit of bass underlining it all. the track is cavernous and metallic, empty and distant as if it somehow survived a nuclear blast. on the flip, alzheimer is a slow and gurgling, swampy techno number with broken drums and crawling synths that sound like their batteries have run down. icy, watery melodies eventually rain down, but the track remains resolutely eerie. last of all, fabric is another decaying track with subtle, heavily filtered synths and drums all making for a minimal groove that is barely there.

over the past years bézier has seen releases under the dark entries record imprint with the most recent telomeres ep this year. the title track &#30342,,,, or pronounced * mina* translates from japanese to * everyone*. mina is a journey through space with the initial ascent marked by a moody window of time in which uncertainty dominates the mindset of the passengers. once they break through the atmosphere and are proceeding as planned they land on the final destination, an interplanetary discotheque. mina was recorded this year with mark pistel on the helms for mixing and features sf drummer kevin woodruff of tussle fame providing live drumming for the last portion of the track. along with the title track the b-side includes tracks previously released on compilations but appear here for maximum record playing enjoyment. * serengeti drive* which appeared on honey soundsystems earlier hnytrx compilation of queer dancefloor artists is the slow burner of the group. * mysteries of the deep* which appeared in the jacktone cassette compilation of bay area electronic stars is the soundtrack to an underwater expedition. both tracks were recorded, produced and mixed by robert in his home sf studio in 2009.

the anticipated second release from los angeles/seattle imprint slumdiscs comes in the form of a 12 inch from two artists who have each had a prolific year, refining their respective takes on dark electronics. side a features three tracks from italian producer morkebla (where to now?/reckno). he utilizes ethereal synths to create vast, mind expanding soundscapes just as suited for club use as they are for deep meditation. side b is provided by portland artist best available technology (astro:dynamics/working nights). contained within is an experiment in variations and reductions that rewards close listeners with a glimpse into the slow decay of self-contained sonic ecosystems. *go slumming* marks the first full length collaboration between the two artists and showcases the best of their respective styles.

san jose native (now berlin based) lady blacktronika aka akua marcelle grant is the latest edition to the meda fury family - described by resident advisor as the first lady of deep house, her slow but steady rise has resulted from a slew of smoky, beatdown inflected workouts, topped with her sultry vocals, and infused with a sense of her personal struggles and hardships.

a labour of love and friendship, the camila ep contains two finely-worked originals. the slow, loping, scratchy jnd is a collaboration with close friend jürgen von krebs that brings to mind stl and theo parrish in its interlocking simplicity and off-key accents. ricky g. a black, very black, vinyl record which stands out compared to previous releases on limited. the sixth chapter of andrea belluzzi’s label is titled black series because its objective is to devastate the ordinary lines of techno and let loose the dark black wings which are the base of the project. on side a, mike storm and transientx4 lead us through a gradual scale of mysterious and mechanical loops capable of hypnotizing while increasing the level of pathos. this culminates the gradual build up to the third track, produced by andrea belluzzi, with a perfect balance between dark techno and ambient in a mental voyage which seems to never lose itself during the entire 7 minutes with the perfect energy for the dancefloor. the record ends with the work of ken karter which, although is strictly mental and super hypnotic, manages to offer a distinct danceable rhythm marked by low frequencies which remain slow but captivating with a wide array of sounds which grow without boring the listener.

deep disco warrior the revenge turns in an epic hypnotic mix of slow burning house nailed down by analogue bass and acid. using a filtered vocal it builds slowly as the bottom end is tweeked towards a mesmeric journey through minimal wigged out disco. sleazy mcqueen and romano arcaini turn in a disco inflected house mix with congas, spaces out synths and enough dynamics to keep any dancefloor bubbling. it builds with added percussion and a filtered pad before the lead hits the break and the track comes back in with even more wallop. drug empire is an original off the album and has had support from the likes of rune lindbaek, crazy p’s hot toddy and horse meat disco. said to be inspired by theo parrish’s productions it’s a delicious slice of bass driven deep disco with a nod to the looser end of detroit and chicago. it’s all about the fully locked in three note analogue moog bass which holds down the grooved out drums before breaking to jazzy rhodes at the end. one for the heads.
